I first joined TuDiabetes in the summer of 2008 – back when we had about 3,000 members, I think. I was recently married, dreaming of motherhood, and watching ALL of my friends give birth to beautiful children. I couldn’t find anyone in my life who understood the additional hurdle I faced as a type 1 diabetic trying to get my health in order so I could try to conceive safely. My A1c was finally in the 7s after 18 years of floundering in the 8-14% range and struggling for that kind of control, but I was still far from the “below 6.5%” that I needed to achieve to get the green light.
Then I discovered this community. I met women in the same stage as I was and those who were a few steps ahead. I asked questions, I made friends, and I finally got the green light four months later with an A1c of 6.1%. Nine frustrating months after that, we finally conceived. And nine months after that, with A1cs in the 5s the whole pregnancy, BabyBL has made her entrance into the world.
