Hey everyone. I’m type 2, have been for 3 years now. I am on Metformin 1000mg, glipizide 5mg, and Lantus 60units before bed (among a slew of other drugs my doctor insists I must take because I am diabetic).
Recently I went low (55) and woke up sweating my brains out and my heart was beating out of my chest.. but my hands were damp and freezing and I could barely walk I was shaking so bad. This was my first low and it terrified me. I just can’t understand why or how I went low. I did my normal routine except I didn’t work out as hard at the gym as usual and I had a high carb dinner (I indulged on a foot long from subway). Before bed my BS was at 132 and I took my normal 60 units of Lantus. To get me up from being low I did the “eat everything in sight” thing everyone warns about – but I was in panic mode even though I DO have small candies by my bed side just in case, I didn’t even think about them. I shot back up to normal pretty quickly and went back to bed. When I woke up I was at 284 because of my binge.
Because of this low I have been scared to take my Lantus at night. 60 units seems like an awful lot! My doctor said it is because of my weight (I am 240lbs, down from the 280s when I was first diagnosed and now my weight is getting lower by the day). I test 2 hours after my meal and then right before I go to bed and I am usually normal. The day after my low I didn’t take the Lantus at night. When I went to bed I was at 118 and when I woke up I was at 102… around noon I was at 104, after dinner I was at 122 and before bed I was at 112. I took the Lantus before bed the next night even though I tested at 112 and then I set my alarm to wake me up at 3:30am (something my boyfriend was not happy about but he can shove it!) and I was at 89 at 3:30am… and then back up to 110 in the morning.
I guess what I’m trying to get to here is I want to know if I should ask my doctor to take me off of the Lantus. Or do you think I should stay on the Lantus until I start having more lows? I’m just scared of lows – and I actually think I handled my first time being low pretty well even though it terrified me. I’ve only been on the lantus about 2 months now and it’s been working great so far, but at the same time she put me on Lantus she also started me on glipizide. I think she should have started the glipizide and THEN if it wasn’t working she should have added lantus into my routine. Any thoughts on that??
