For a woman with diabetes, going through menopause brings a few extra challenges. As in other women, declining hormone levels may cause typical symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. But because you have diabetes, those hormone changes also may cause shifts in your blood sugar levels, and it could become harder to manage your diabetes. Uncontrolled blood sugar raises your risk of diabetes complications.

Women with diabetes may also reach menopause earlier than other women. Menopause occurs when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 1 full year. The average age of menopause for most women is around age 50 or 51. Women with type 1 diabetes are more likely to reach menopause at an earlier age.

What happens?
