The walk is a hope for a cure for the three million people in America who have type 1 diabetes.
JDRF Across America
The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes is no isolated event, happening in a smattering of cities hither and yon. Every year, over 200 cities host a Walk, and more than 750,00 people get their shoes on to join in the fun. Nearly 9,000 teams come together. Last year, attendees raised more than $90 million.
JDRF – The Driving Force
These events are hosted, planned, and organized by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, better known as JDRF. The JDRF is the most influential source for the funding and research for curing type 1 diabetes. So far, they’ve given over $1.4 billion to diabetes research. That’s a lot of money. That’s a lot of influence. That’s $1.4 billion closer to a cure. JDRF was founded in 1970. Over the 40 years since it’s founding, it has pioneered breakthroughs, advanced information, and improved life for thousands of children and adults with diabetes.
Walk to Cure Diabetes – What Is It All About?
A JDRF walk is more than just walk. Many walks offer meals, music, snacks, clowns, kids areas, entertainment and a whole lot more. Sounds a lot better than most walks you take, huh? The Walk to Cure Diabetes events are even more. They are giving employees, citizens, families, relatives, companies, churches, and schools the opportunity to contribute to a wonderful cause that is forging a way forward for the cure of diabetes.
I Want to Walk!
There are Walks happening all over America. The JDRF walk website has a database where you can easily find out about what’s happening in your state. Check it out. Since August and September are back-to-school months, there are usually several walks going on. You can even start your own team. Team participants–from big companies to small companies, to schools, to non-profit organizations, and religious groups–can have a part in a big way. It’s not just a good PR move; it’s a great way to contribute to finding a cure for one of the nation’s most damaging diseases.
Now that you’ve read, get to the JDRF walk website (http://walk.jdrf.org/), find out where the next walk is taking place, and get involved. In the words of Kevin Kline, actor and father of a kid with diabetes,“Just when you thought it was safe to walk out your front door, it’s not only safe–it’s saving lives.”
