Our Clinical Team is comprised of two Diabetic Educators, Janet VanDeest, CRM, ART and Beth Polo Beckel, RD, LD CDE, Richard Egan, Pedorthist and Harmond Amernick, Chief Pharmasist. Here’s what they had to say about why testing for diabetes is important:
Beth Polo Beckel: A lot of us, in fact over 20 million Americans, have diabetes. Unfortunately, a third of us, both adults and children, don’t know that we have the disease. Diabetes can result in the development of kidney, eye, and nerve damage, heart disease, and/or stroke. Early diagnosis of diabetes is important, because with good blood sugar and blood pressure control, many of the complications of diabetes can be prevented. If you don’t know that you have diabetes, you can not protect yourself from developing these problems. Get screened for diabetes – especially if you have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, and/or get limited exercise. Remember many of the classic symptoms that we associate with diabetes like increased thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue are not always present.
Rich Egan: Many people destined to develop type 2 diabetes spend many years in a state of pre-diabetes; termed “Americas largest health care epidemic,”pre-diabetes indicates a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.As of 2009 there are 57 million Americans who have pre-diabetes.This is why it is imperative for people to be familiar with their blood glucose levels.
